Kelly's Lane dig was originally started during the outbreak of foot and mouth, when access to most sites in the Forest was restricted. The cave is actually on a piece of land owned by one of the diggers, so was perfect to prevent the digging team finding other ways to pass their Wednesday evenings. The dig turned out to actually be quite interesting, and a huge effort was made, following a small rift downwards with lumps of calcite being found amongst the spoil. However, the slight draught was lost, and the dig began to fill with water at it's base. Eventually, realising that there were more promising sites calling out for attention, the dig has been shelved for the time being.
